Η αποχώρηση κάθε εμβληματικού ποδοσφαιριστή από την εθνική ομάδα της πατρίδας του μοιάζει με 'μαχαιριά' για κάθε Έλληνα διεθνή.
Ας μην απαριθμήσουμε τα παραδείγματα, γιατί στο φινάλε θα χάσουμε το μέτρημα. Ακόμη και η γενιά του 2004, ένα προς ένα μέλος της, είναι δικαιολογημένα παραπονεμένη για τη συμπεριφορά που έχει συναντήσει ως τώρα. Μια πλακέτα, μια ανθοδέσμη κι ένα χειροκρότημα (κάπου, κάπως, κάποτε) δεν αρκούν προφανώς. Ιδίως για παιδιά που πέτυχαν το ακατόρθωτο.
Φέρτε μονάχα στο μυαλό σας τις τρομερές εικόνες από το τι συμβαίνει σε ανάλογες περιπτώσεις του εξωτερικού. Άλλη κουλτούρα θα πεις. Βεβαίως. Αλλά κάποια 'ιερά και όσια' είναι υποχρέωση να τιμούνται με τρόπο που θα μείνει ανεξίτηλα χαραγμένος στο μυαλό τους. Θα γίνει εικόνα στο άλμπουμ της ζωής τους, σημάδι που θα μείνει εσαεί.
Το τελευταίο χειροπιαστό παράδειγμα ήταν ο Γουέιν Ρούνεϊ. Ένα ολόκληρο φιλικό παιχνίδι, αυτό της προηγούμενης Πέμπτης με τις ΗΠΑ, στήθηκε γύρω του. Στο 58ο λεπτό ο ίδιος πήρε θέση στη γραμμή του πλαγίου, φόρεσε στο μπράτσο το περιβραχιόνιο και για 120η φορά έπαιξε με τα 'τρία λιοντάρια' στην καρδιά.

Ο Ρούνεϊ δεν είχε καταφέρει τίποτα στη διεθνή καριέρα του. Παρόλα αυτά οι Άγγλοι φίλαθλοι ήταν στο Γουέμπλεϊ για ένα τελευταίο 'αντίο'. Ο ίδιος το είχε ανάγκη, οι φανς το είχαν ανάγκη γι' αυτήν τη σύνδεση των 15 ετών. Το έζησε όλο αυτό παρέα με τα παιδιά του, τη στιγμή που στις 12 Φεβρουαρίου του 2003 ήταν ο νεότερος που έπαιζε με το εθνόσημο.
Ο 33χρονος σήμερα επιθετικός δεν ήταν ο μοναδικός που βίωσε μια τέτοια στιγμή στην καριέρα του.
